Congratulation to Liu Scholar Laura Lee, winner of the SWAAC Graduate Student Award of Merit

This award was established to recognize women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their university and in the community while maintaining an exemplary academic record. The Award consists of $2,500 and a plaque to be awarded at the organizationís gala dinner at the annual conference in Edmonton, April 30th.

Ms. Lee is a most worthy recipient of this Award, based on her outstanding academic record, teaching, scholarship, and community outreach. Now a first-year PhD student in Interdisciplinary Studies at UBC, she has been actively involved in working and studying in the area of international development with particular reference to populations in Africa, which have suffered through war, genocide, disease, poverty and drought. Ms. Lee brings to this work an outstanding academic profile, a passionate social conscience and the skills and knowledge to manifest her commitment to social justice in practical and significant ways. Her continuing personal, professional and academic journeys will undoubtedly position her for places of leadership in government, NGO and/or academic work which will contribute to the alleviation of human suffering among the most devastated communities on earth.
