Harper’s ‘bickering’ comment during debate sparks Twitter responses
Description: According to PoliTwitter.ca there were 42,519 election-related tweets during Tuesdsay’s English-language leaders’ debate. During the debate, Twitter traffic spiked between 7:43 and 7:50 PM, corresponding to an exchange between Conservative leader Stephen Harper and Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff. Harper talked about the bickering that goes on in parliament and Ignatieff replied that it isn’t bickering, it is democracy. “I think people engaged with it because it has definitely been at the forefront as a big election issue,” said Taylor Owen, a post-doctoral fellow at the Liu Institute for Global Issues at UBC. He studies the role of social media in social movements and world events.
