Navin Ramankutty, Professor, Liu Institute for Global Issues and Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability, UBC has been awarded a Leopold Leadership Fellowship for 2015 for his research: Pathways for reducing environmental impact of the global food production system. Ramankutty will become part of a network of past fellows and program advisors who are working with leaders within and outside academe to solve society’s most pressing environmental and sustainability challenges.

Navin Ramankutty joined UBC in July 2014 as a Professor in Global Food Security and Sustainability, IRES. His research concerns global land use change and its implications, focusing on agricultural practice and the implications for environmental change and food security. He employs data and models to address the question of how to feed 9-10 billion people while reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint.

Based at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, the Leopold Leadership Program provides outstanding academic environmental researchers with skills and approaches for communicating and working with partners in NGOs, business, government and communities to integrate science into decision-making. The program is funded   by the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
