Simon Harding is a first year PhD student at IRES. He has social science background and is interested primarily in urbanization, migration, urban policy, informal economies and public transport in South Asian cities, especially New Delhi. He is particularly interested in how livelihoods derived from the informal sector interact with various forms of urban governance. His PhD research at IRES will look into the auto-rickshaw service in New Delhi under the supervision of Professor Milind Kandlikar. More specifically, it will focus on identifying stakeholders, their interests and interactions, analyzing the diverse forms of regulation and arriving at policy recommendations.
Simonís previous research in this field has appeared in the mainstream Indian press, numerous alternative media sites and on Indian TV. He also blogs for a Delhi-based NGO.

He holds a BSc Geography degree (Bristol) and a MPhil in Development Studies (Oxford) and has worked as an NGO researcher, research analyst and a dry stone waller. He is a grateful recipient of UBCís Four Year Funding Fellowship.
