Shawn is a student in the School of Kinesiology. He previously completed a Masterís of Arts and a Bachelorís of Human Kinetics from the School of Kinesiology at UBC, as well as Bachelorís in Education and a Certificate in International Development. Before beginning his graduate studies, Shawn worked as a physical education instructor in China and for a sports-based NGO in Lesotho.

For his PhD he is interested in exploring the ways that various groups are mobilizing sport to achieve social change. He is particularly interested in how social movement groups mobilize sport, often times but not exclusively, in reaction to mega-sporting events. His research is also concerned with a field of work and study referred to as Sport for Development and Peace, which typically involves non-governmental organizations using sport to achieve various development objectives.
